Convention Photography Guide

Convention photography is challenging — crowded spaces, variable lighting, limited time. Here's how to make the most of every photo opportunity.

Working With Convention Photographers

Most convention photographers are happy to take your photo if you ask politely. Have a pose in mind before approaching — don't make photographers wait while you decide. Know the character you're playing and give them something to work with.

Managing Convention Lighting

Convention halls are typically lit with mixed artificial light that renders colours unusually. Natural light from windows or doorways is almost always better. Find the convention's good light spots early in the day and return for photos.

The Professional Photography Booth

Most large conventions have a dedicated professional photo booth. These are worth the cost for particularly elaborate costumes. Book early — slots fill quickly. Bring reference images of poses you'd like to attempt.

Social Media and Crediting

When posting convention photos, credit the photographer if known. Use the convention hashtag. Tag other cosplayers in group shots with their permission. This builds community and often leads to beautiful photos being shared widely.
