Corset Guide

Corset Fitting for Full Busts

Properly fitted corsets are incredibly comfortable and provide excellent bust support — but fitting one to a full bust requires specific knowledge. This guide covers everything from pattern to lacing.

Corset Construction

The Full-Bust Corset

Why Corsets Work Well for Full Busts

A well-made corset is one of the best support solutions for a full chest in cosplay — it distributes the weight of the bust across the entire torso rather than just the shoulder straps, eliminates back strain on long convention days, and creates a beautiful, intentional silhouette. Heidi of Chimera Costumes has documented corset construction extensively on her TikTok and YouTube channels.

The Full Bust Adjustment in Corsets

Standard corset patterns are typically fitted to the waist and hips, with the bust cups assumed to sit above the corset rather than being incorporated. For a full-bust corset that incorporates the bust, you'll need to grade the pattern up at the bust and add cup shaping. The process is similar to an FBA in a bodice pattern but applied to the corset's structural panels.

Boning Placement for Full Busts

Boning placement in a corset with a large bust needs careful planning. The bones directly below the bust provide the most critical support — they carry the weight upward rather than outward. Too-widely spaced boning at the bust creates gaps in the structure. Too many bones creates rigidity that restricts breathing. Aim for boning placement every 1.5–2 inches across the full-bust corset panels.

Incorporating Cups

Cups sewn into the corset interior provide shaping and modesty without requiring a separate bra. For a full-bust corset, cups in your actual cup size create the best fit — the corset structure supports the cups from below while the cups provide the shaping from outside.

Lacing Correctly

A corset on a full bust laces differently from a standard fit. The lacing at the bust level needs more ease than at the waist — don't try to close a full-bust corset to the same measurement as your waist at the bust. A properly fitted full-bust corset will have a slight lacing gap at the bust that narrows toward the waist.
