Fabric Selection
Stretch fabrics — jersey, knit, stretch woven — give more forgiveness on a full bust and are more forgiving of fitting errors. Woven fabrics with no give require precise pattern adaptation. Avoid very stiff or very sheer fabrics for closely fitted pieces until you have a reliable fitting muslin.
Always Make a Muslin
Before cutting into your good fabric, make a test garment from cheap cotton in the same weight as your fashion fabric. This is where you make all your fitting adjustments — FBA, dart repositioning, seam adjustments — before committing to expensive material.
Seam Allowance Strategy
Use 5/8in seam allowances on fitted costume pieces to give yourself room to let out at fitting. Mark the original stitching line clearly so you can grade back in where the fit is good.
Stay-Stitching
Stay-stitch curved seam lines — necklines, armholes — before doing anything else. This prevents stretching during fitting and gives a clean edge for adjustments.
