Preparing Skin Before Applying Tape or Adhesive
Clean, completely dry, oil-free skin is the single biggest factor in how well any costume tape or adhesive support performs and how comfortably it removes. Wash the application area with a gentle cleanser, dry it fully, and avoid applying any lotion, oil, or heavy moisturizer beforehand — residual product is the most common cause of adhesive failing to hold through a long, warm convention day.
Choosing the Right Adhesive for Your Skin
Medical-grade fashion or body tape designed for extended wear is a meaningfully different product from general-purpose fabric or duct tape, and is worth the extra cost — it's formulated specifically for skin contact and repeated removal without excessive irritation. If you have sensitive skin or a known adhesive sensitivity, patch-test any new product on a small area at least 24 hours before wearing it for a full convention day, not the morning of.
Removing Tape Without Damaging Skin
Peel slowly in the direction of hair growth rather than straight up, and use an oil-based adhesive remover (baby oil and dedicated adhesive removers both work well) rather than pulling dry tape off quickly — dry removal is the most common cause of skin irritation and can leave redness that lingers into the next convention day if you're wearing tape across multiple days in a row.
Giving Skin Recovery Time Between Wears
If you're wearing adhesive support across a multi-day convention, alternate the exact placement slightly where the costume allows, and apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the area each evening after removal. Continuous tape application to the exact same patch of skin across several consecutive days is the most common cause of irritation that shows up midway through a convention rather than on day one.
