What Each Style Actually Supports

An underbust corset sits below the bust and needs to be paired with a separate supportive bra, since it provides no bust support of its own. An overbust corset extends up over the bust and can provide real support if properly fitted with cup shaping — but it needs a genuine full bust adjustment in the pattern, not just a taller version of the same underbust shape.

When Underbust Makes More Sense

If the character's costume design already includes a separate bodice or top layer over the corset, underbust is usually the simpler choice — you're not trying to solve bust support and torso shaping in one garment, and you have more flexibility to choose whatever bra or support garment actually works for your body.

When Overbust Is Worth the Extra Fitting Work

If the corset itself is the visible costume layer with no separate bodice over it, overbust gives a cleaner single-garment silhouette — but budget significantly more fitting time, since getting the cup shaping correct on an overbust corset for a full bust is a genuinely harder pattern problem than underbust construction.

Mixing Both Approaches

Some of the most comfortable full-bust corset costumes actually use an underbust corset over a separately fitted, structured bra top — visually reading as one overbust piece while actually being two garments working together. This is often easier to fit accurately than a true single-piece overbust corset, and worth considering even for designs that look like overbust in reference art.
