Why Vinyl and Latex Fit Differently Than Fabric
Vinyl and latex have dramatically less stretch and recovery than woven fabric or stretch knits, which means sizing has to be far more precise from the start — there's very little forgiveness for a measurement that's slightly off, the way there might be with a stretch fabric that can accommodate a small margin of error. Support usually needs to come from a garment worn underneath rather than relying on the vinyl or latex itself for structure, since these materials don't hold shape the way boning or structured fabric does.
Getting Into a Fitted Piece Safely
A proper dressing aid — talc, cornstarch, or a dedicated latex dressing lubricant — makes an enormous difference in getting into a fitted latex or vinyl piece without tearing the material or straining seams. Skipping this step and forcing a tight piece on dry is one of the most common causes of split seams in latex costuming, and it's an entirely avoidable one.
Sizing for a Full Bust in Non-Stretch Materials
Because there's so little give in the material itself, a full bust adjustment in vinyl or latex needs to be built into the pattern before cutting, not adjusted after the fact the way you might nudge a fabric seam. Add a separate bust panel with its own seam rather than trying to stretch one continuous piece across the chest — this also gives you a seam line to hide any minor fitting corrections during construction.
Care and Longevity
Wipe both materials down with a damp cloth and mild soap after wear rather than machine washing, and keep them away from direct sunlight and heat during storage — both degrade vinyl and latex noticeably faster than fabric. Latex specifically should be lightly dusted with talc before storage to keep it from sticking to itself, and both materials benefit from being stored away from any metal that could cause staining over time.
