Support Comes First, Character Accuracy Second
Swimsuit-based costumes offer very little natural structure to work with, so building in real support — underwire, molded cups, or boning worked into the costume's construction — has to be the priority, even if it means deviating slightly from the exact source design. A visually accurate swimsuit costume that's uncomfortable and unsupported within an hour is a worse outcome than one with slightly adapted construction that actually holds up for a full day.
Adapting Commercial Swimwear as a Base
Commercial swimsuits with underwire or molded cups built in make a far better starting base than a soft bralette-style suit, even if the color or cut needs modification to match the character. It's much easier to dye, trim, or reshape an already-supportive swimsuit than to add structural support to one that has none.
Checking Convention Coverage Policies
Coverage requirements vary significantly between conventions, and some events have specific minimum coverage guidelines that apply even to canon-accurate swimsuit or minimal-coverage characters. Check the specific convention's costume policy in advance — enforcement and exact requirements differ enough between events that it's worth confirming rather than assuming last year's rules, or another convention's rules, still apply.
Staying Comfortable in Minimal Coverage
Discomfort compounds over a long day faster in minimal-coverage costumes than in fuller ones, since there's less fabric to distribute pressure points. Prioritize genuinely comfortable, well-fitted support underneath over how much coverage the costume itself provides — the support garment does most of the comfort work, regardless of how much of the costume is visible on top of it.
