Pattern Selection and Adjustment for Implants

The most common fit issue with implants and cosplay patterns is upper-pole fullness: the characteristic roundness at the top of the breast that many implants create. Most patterns drafted for natural busts account for a gradual slope from collarbone to bust apex; implants often create a more abrupt transition that requires additional ease at the upper chest/bust seam area.

If a bodice pattern gaps at the neckline or pulls across the upper chest with implants, the fix is adding ease specifically at the upper bust — not a full FBA, which adds ease at the apex and below, but a targeted adjustment at the upper cup area. This is sometimes called an 'upper cup adjustment' or 'high bust ease adjustment' and involves slashing the pattern piece horizontally across the upper cup and spreading by the required amount.

Avoiding Compression Discomfort

Tight boning directly over implants — particularly over-muscle (subglandular) implants — can cause discomfort during extended wear. The key is designing boning placement to run around the implant rather than directly over it. Side-seam boning should stop at or below the under-bust line rather than extending up into the cup area. Princess seam boning curves around the side of the bust rather than crossing the projection of the implant.

Under-bust banding (the horizontal seam below the cup in many cosplay bodices) should be fitted so it sits at the natural under-bust crease rather than riding up. Implants can push the under-bust crease downward slightly compared to a natural bust of similar size — take this measurement on the body rather than estimating from a pattern.

Neckline Design for Augmented Figures

Several neckline types work exceptionally well for augmented figures in cosplay: plunge necklines that follow the medial cleavage line, straight-across bandeau styles that work with the consistent projection of implants, and deeply cut V-necks that showcase the upper-pole fullness rather than fighting it.

Neckline types to approach with care: very high necklines that cross the upper pole can create compression and an unflattering silhouette if not properly adjusted. Ruffled or gathered necklines at the upper chest can add bulk in an area where implants already have significant projection. Halter necklines place all support at the neck — ensure the attachment is structurally sound for the weight involved.
