Plus-size cosplay construction requires a different relationship with patterns than standard sizing assumes. Most commercial and fan-made cosplay patterns are drafted for a B-cup with a defined hip-to-waist ratio. Getting beautiful results for a full bust, wide hip, or plus-size figure means understanding where patterns fail and having the techniques to fix them.
Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) for Cosplay Patterns
The Full Bust Adjustment is the single most important pattern alteration for large-busted cosplayers. It adds the cup depth and horizontal width that a pattern drafted for a B-cup lacks, preventing the classic problems of pulling across the chest, gaping at the neckline, and side seams that rotate forward. The FBA adds width at the bust apex, increases the dart intake, and lengthens the front bodice piece proportionally.
To determine how much FBA you need: subtract your high bust measurement from your full bust measurement. Each inch of difference over one inch generally requires half an inch of FBA width. For a cup size difference of D over high bust, you're typically adding 1–1.5 inches of FBA. Work through the adjustment systematically — slash through the dart and down through the hem, spread the pattern piece by the required amount, and true all cut edges before cutting fabric.
For cosplay patterns with shaped necklines, princess seaming, or complex structural elements, complete each FBA slash one at a time and re-draw the curved edges before moving to the next. Rushing an FBA through a complex pattern piece creates compounding errors that are difficult to diagnose in the finished garment.

Pattern Grading for Plus-Size Cosplay
Commercial pattern grading (stepping up multiple sizes) distributes ease additions across the shoulder, bust, waist, and hip in proportions defined by the pattern company's fit model. For plus-size cosplay, this generic grading rarely works well because the proportional relationships between sizes don't match most people's bodies — specifically, grading up at the bust typically adds too much shoulder width and not enough cup depth.
A better approach for plus-size cosplay fitting is to grade using your individual measurements as a guide. Grade up at the bust using FBA rather than size grading. Keep the shoulder width at your measured shoulder width. Add ease at the waist and hip separately from the bust. This creates a pattern built for your specific proportions rather than a generic plus-size model.

Construction Techniques for Full-Bust Cosplay
For full-bust cosplay bodices, seam allowances carry more stress than in standard-size construction. Use 5/8" seam allowances rather than the 3/8" that some pattern companies default to. Reinforce bust apex points with small organza or interfacing squares before joining seams. Stay-stitch curved necklines immediately after cutting — large busts exert outward drag on necklines that distorts them during construction if not stabilized early.
Underline every bodice piece with a stable but slightly stretchy material — power net or swim lining works well. The underlining prevents the fashion fabric from distorting under bust weight and extends the garment's lifespan significantly. Work with the underlining and fashion fabric as one piece from the first seam, not as a separate layer added at the end.
