Making Strapless Costumes Work for Full Busts

Strapless costumes and large busts have a complicated relationship — but with the right approach, strapless looks absolutely work. Here's how to make them stay in place and stay comfortable.

Strapless Solutions

Strapless Costumes on a Full Bust

The Challenge

Strapless garments rely on friction, structure, and body heat to stay in place. On a larger bust, the weight of the chest pulls downward continuously — without straps to counteract this, a garment needs either significant internal structure or reliable adhesive to stay put through a full convention day.

Built-In Structural Support

The most reliable approach for strapless cosplay costumes is to build support directly into the garment. A heavily boned bodice that grips the torso — similar to a corset — can support even a heavy bust without any separate undergarment. The garment itself does the work. See the corset fitting guide for boning techniques.

Strapless Bras for Full Busts

Standard strapless bras don't work for full busts — they slip. Full-bust specialist strapless bras have wider silicone grip bands and more substantial cups that actually support larger sizes. These are an investment but worth it for conventions. Always test them with movement at home before wearing to a convention.

Adhesive Solutions Under Strapless Pieces

Silicone adhesive cups and breast lift tape can be used under very light strapless costume pieces where a full bra would show. For heavier busts or costumes worn for a long day, adhesive solutions alone are not sufficient — they should be combined with structural undergarments or built-in costume support.

The Belt Solution

Adding a structural belt, cincher, or waist-tie to a strapless costume provides a downward anchor point that helps keep the whole garment in place. Even a decorative belt that the character wouldn't canonically wear can be justified as a costume interpretation while solving a very practical fitting problem.
